A new gateway to the sea, industry and global trade — Ogun’s $7bn maritime project takes a major step from long-held ambition to implementation.
The long-standing vision of establishing a major deep seaport along Ogun State’s coastline has taken a significant step forward following the signing of Memoranda of Understanding between the Ogun State Government and global ports and logistics operator, DP World.
The agreements, signed in Paris, France, provide the framework for the development of the Gateway Deep Sea Port at Ogun Waterside and the Ogun State Blue Marine Special Economic Zone, a proposed 10,000-hectare industrial and maritime development.
According to the Nigerian Presidency, the projects are expected to attract more than $7 billion in initial investment and, when fully developed, generate over 50,000 direct jobs, in addition to further indirect employment opportunities across manufacturing, logistics, maritime services, construction, technology and related sectors.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu witnessed the signing alongside Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy Adegboyega Oyetola, Nigerian Ports Authority Managing Director Abubakar Dantsoho and senior representatives of DP World and other investment partners.
The proposed Gateway Deep Sea Port is designed to do more than provide another point for ships to berth. Government plans envisage an integrated maritime-industrial corridor where the port would serve as the logistics backbone for the Blue Marine Special Economic Zone.
The port is planned with a four-kilometre berth and an 18-metre draft, specifications intended to allow it to accommodate larger vessels and provide an alternative route to the heavily congested Lagos port corridor.
The economic zone, meanwhile, is expected to provide space for manufacturing, processing, logistics and export-oriented businesses. The Federal Government says the concept is to enable imported inputs to be transformed into finished products while Nigerian raw materials are processed for export, potentially strengthening the country's non-oil export capacity.
President Tinubu said the Federal Government would support the projects with regulatory and institutional measures, as well as road, rail and power connectivity, while pledging to address bureaucratic obstacles that could slow implementation.
A key part of the proposed connectivity is the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. The Presidency said the 28-kilometre Ogun section of the highway is expected to provide an important transport link between the port, the economic zone, Lagos and the wider Nigerian hinterland.
The emerging corridor is also expected to connect with other strategic developments in the area, including the proposed Nigerian Navy Operating Base and Dockyard and the OK LNG Project, creating a broader intersection between maritime trade, manufacturing, logistics and energy.
For Ogun State, the agreements revive a coastal development ambition that has remained largely unrealised for decades. Governor Dapo Abiodun described the signing as a significant moment for the state's economic future, emphasising the potential for the port and economic zone to attract investment, strengthen supply chains and create opportunities for businesses and workers.
But the significance of the announcement will ultimately depend on what follows the signing ceremony. The MoUs establish an investment framework; construction, financing, infrastructure delivery, environmental safeguards, host-community engagement and actual job creation will determine how far the proposed transformation goes.
For now, Ogun has secured a major international partner in DP World and set out an ambitious plan to connect its coastline with global shipping routes and a large-scale industrial zone.
If delivered as planned, the Gateway Deep Sea Port and Blue Marine Special Economic Zone would reshape the economic landscape of Ogun Waterside while giving manufacturers and exporters another potential gateway to Nigerian and African markets.
