In a shocking display of electoral malpractice, the ongoing by-elections in Ganye, Adamawa State have been marred by widespread and blatant vote-buying. Despite the heavy presence of security personnel, agents from both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were observed openly inducing voters with cash at numerous polling units.
The contest, which has devolved into a fierce battle for supremacy between the two rival parties, has seen party agents employ increasingly cunning tactics to circumvent surveillance measures. As a result, what should have been a democratic exercise has instead become a cynical "game of the highest bidder," according to disillusioned voters.
Our on-the-ground investigation revealed that votes were being traded for sums ranging from 2,000 to 5,000 Naira per ballot at multiple polling stations. These included Gangtiyabumso in Gamu Ward, Sangasumi, Gangwari Palace, Ganye 1, Ganye 2, Tsohon Kasuwa, Dadiri Trigali, and Sabon Layi.
One voter, speaking on condition of anonymity, candidly admitted, "The truth is, votes don't count here. They'll still manipulate the outcome. So I better collect my share of the loot." This statement underscores the deep-seated cynicism and distrust in the electoral process that has taken root among the electorate.
Sources indicate that the vote-buying operation began as early as two days prior to the election, when representatives from both the APC and PDP descended upon Ganye town, armed with cash, fertilizer, and various agricultural supplies to entice voters.
Political analysts and election observers point to a toxic combination of poverty, hunger, and political illiteracy as key factors being ruthlessly exploited by both parties in their desperate scramble for victory. This brazen corruption of the democratic process raises serious questions about the integrity of the election and the long-term implications for Nigeria's political landscape.
As the polls close and vote counting begins, the specter of these widespread irregularities looms large over the results. It remains to be seen how electoral authorities and the broader Nigerian public will respond to this flagrant subversion of democratic principles.
